The ProperBlog Has Proper Fun At Cambridge 2009!

(Originally posted on the ProperBlog)

Your faithful correspondent has returned from Cambridge, smelling slightly fresher and having had a half-decent night’s sleep, waking up not covered in mud in somewhere which wasn’t a freezing cold marquee.

As regular readers will remember, we here at Proper run the CD stall at Cambridge Festival and, as such, don’t get to see any of the bands.  So we’re not going to tell you about how great any of them were.  Besides, there are plenty of people who can tell you all about that.  So we shall tell you about our fun experiences instead…

We left for the fest on Wednesday afternoon in three vans (we take a LOT of stuff with us).  On the way down, one of the Luton vans (the one with all the stock) got a large screw stuck in the tyre, meaning the guys in the van had to stop off and get the wheel fixed.  They were in Bow at the time and came across a particularly lazy, unhelpful mechanic who couldn’t be bothered to fix the wheel, although did make an effort to lift the van by using a jack designed for a normal car on the axel.  He recommended another branch in Leytonstone.

Complete List of WOMEX 2009 Showcases

WOMEX 09 announced in three installments the list of world music artists (see list below) selected to showcase in Copenhagen this Fall. The WOMEX 09 night showcases will all take place under one roof at the new Copenhagen Concert Hall run by Danish Broadcasting (DR). It consists of four halls with the main auditorium seating 1,800 people. WOMEX is working in partnership with Roskilde Festival producers to assure the best possible concert conditions for this year's showcases.

Once again WOMEX used an online tool for the showcase proposal submissions - http://www.sonicbids.com. It gave the WOMEX Jury enough
time to go through all artists' proposals and draw up a personal list of favorites before the actual jury meeting - which still lasted for three days (and nights).

The Copenhagen Concert Hall is only two metro stations away from WOMEX's daytime venue Bella Center. The metro will be running throughout the night every 15-20 minutes.

List of confirmed showcases:

- Brigada Retro Mishto (Romania)
- Cedric Watson & Bijou Creole (USA)
- Deba (Mayotte/France)
- Dulsori (South Korea)
- Kayhan Kalhor and Brooklyn Rider (Iran/USA)
- Kouyaté-Neerman (Mali/France)
- Mamer (China)
- Oreka TX (Spain)
- SpokFrevo Orquestra (Brazil)
- Watcha Clan (France/Algeria)

- DJ: Maga Bo (Brazil)

See Kanda Bongo Man and Malkit Singh free at Croydon Summer Festival on August 1-2

See Kanda Bongo Man and Malkit Singh free at Croydon Summer Festival on August 1-2
-

It must be one of the biggest bargains in the UK festival calendar – a weekend full of top world music names in Lloyd Park in Croydon on August 1-2 at the totally free Croydon Summer Festival.

The festival divides into a World Party on August 1 with such acts as Cameroonian kwassa kwassa king Kanda Bongo Man, Dreadzone, Eduardo Niebla Experience, Latin Dub Sound System and the dulcet tones of Scotland’s most famous twins, the Proclaimers, and the Croydon Mela – one of the UK’s oldest – on August 2. The Mela is headlined by bhangra legend Malkit Singh – who received an MBE last year for services to Punjabi music, something his fans would thoroughly concur with. He is joined by Veronica, Channi Singh with Alaap, Swami, Grand Union Bangla Band and Bireswar Gautam amongst others.

All this world music will be surrounded by street theatre in Lloyd Park, Croydon from 1-8.30pm on August 1 and 1-8pm on August 2.
